  1. This is great new, indeed. I am humbled to see my old sweater and vest associated with such good news.

  2. Syd A Little Vicious

That is a very nice sweater. I think it is better suited for guys than for girls. I would go on a second date with a guy who wore that sweater out on our first date.

  3. Syd A Little Vicious

Caveat: But not if he wore glasses that looked like science goggles, as in one of the photos above. And probably not if he wore turquoise sneaks, with or without the science goggles. Protective eye wear should not be required on a first date.

  4. Dope, that looks great. Would be a nice piece to have in early fall.

  5. This sweater brings me back to the 6th grade which was 1993 for me. I wore it to Picture Day. It’s a shame it doesn’t fit that well. Did they update the silhouette?

  6. This sweater inspires me, more than ever, to start dressing more like the cast of “thirtysomething” did.

  7. christopher

hilarious – i totally have one of these sweaters. the guy who cast it off is going to regret having done so; knowing him, he’ll prolly ask for it back.

  8. Love the Norwegian sweater. I inherited my uncle’s from the 70’s.

  9. What a timeless staple… I’m bringing those brands back to the menswear shows in NYC this summer… Well not LL Bean for obvious reasons… But you catch my drift. Stay tuned and great post as always!

  10. Just in time for . . . summer?

If you don’t want to wait until ’09, Woolovers has a beautiful Norwegian sweater, quite reasonably priced. Also, Janus of Norway has a stunning Norwegian-style sweater, pics of which can be seen on Daconet’s (of Denmark) site.

  12. HTJ, you’re part of the reason for the reissue. Consider me humbled to have you visit my site.

    Syd, selective are we?

Ryan, it’s a heavy mother. This one comes out as the foliage is peaking and doesn’t come off until you crawl out your cave.

Cano, it looks like the ribbed cuff is different, but I’ve been assured they’ve made virtually the same sweater. Back in the day, they did a poly/wool mix because the wool wasn’t that strong. Now, it’s 100% of the natural stuff.

MP, great vid. I’ve never had a Sven. Have you?

Treasury, 30something. Brilliant programming. Shame they haven’t released it on DVD.

Christopher, “knowing him?” What are you talking about. Do you know him?

Mr. Fox, nothing compares to an heirloom sweater. Well, maybe an heirloom tomato.

AC, you’re the coolest. Bring ’em back in a big way.

Death, no one likes a party pooper. This is newsworthy weather be damned. Cool yer jets, man.

William, the point isn’t necessarily to own something from Norway. It’s part of the Bean sweater’s charm, but the peculiarities of Bean’s sweater, with the three ticks, the huge collar, and little else are what make this thing a classic. I understand Woolovers, who makes a beautiful green sweater, and Janus make classic Norwegian sweaters, but Bean’s will – whether originally theirs or not – be associated with them until time stops.

  13. I didn’t even know they’d gone away. I finally had to sew suede patches on the elbows of my first one, and then it got demoted to painting sweater, and then around 1998 I acquired a new one when Bean’s still had an outlet store here in Oregon. Funny thing; I just can’t bring myself to part with the painting sweater.

That sweater is beyond essential; it is *key*. I have 4: 2 classic blue/white, 1 in the cream color & one in dark grey w/ maroon checks. I had the Maroon & white one (quite rare!) but loaned it to a girl at college, never to see it again! The sweater is particularly nice for guys my size (6′ 5″, 250+ lbs.) as it is actually big enough to layer under!

  17. OMG … I can’t believe it. Mine carried me through Cornell, my first job, my second job in NYC and then bit the dust when a moth in my first apartment ate part of the sleeve. I want one now for nostalgia’s sake. I must admit, however, that the Norwegian does seem to flatter a cute guy more …

  18. P.S.
Love The Preppy Handbook reference. I still have mine. What does that mean!?
